" Impressionism, Fashion, And Modernity".
The exhibition's paintings from 1860s-1880s focus on the relationship between art and fashion and are brought to life by the added collection of period costumes ...
day dresses, ball gowns, men's suits, hats, gloves, and shoes!
The exhibition worked wonders displaying original dresses adjacent to paintings...
notice the similarity in Monet's 1866 painting "Camille" and the green and black striped dress.
I was surprised in Renoir's 1878 painting,
"Madame George Charpentier and Her Children" ....
the child sitting next to the mother is actually her son, Paul.
Paul is dressed the same as his older sister, Georgette...
the fashion of the time!
I love the black and white dog adding balance to the mother's dress.
Fashion was now so important,
some artist accumulated a collection of costumes for their models.
James Tissot's 1878 painting, "July, Specimen of a Portrait",
features a white muslin dress with yellow satin bows
also worn by models in his other works.
Artist often chose white dresses, as they allowed reflected light and shadows.
Fashion goes beyond the dress..
Edgar Degas was intrigued by hats and hat stands...
