"What Is" ?? My New Favorite French Antique

Braving snow, rain, and cold in Paris....
my heart glowed when I discovered this gilt wood piece hanging in a dealer's shop.

I instantly loved it !!

The shape

The patina

The size....34" tall and 16" wide

The surrounding vine and fruit carvings
The front and back are the same

I could think of so many uses....
but how was it used originally in 1900??

I spoke to the dealer who explained....
then I loved it even more !!!

How do you think it was used ???

  1. OMG...who cares what it was originally used for, I want it now!!! LOL! Ok, I will guess....something church related? A base for a statue?

  2. Oh Theresa, You have such a wonderful eye, I am thrilled it spoke to you also.

It is not from a church, although many pieces I love started in a church.

    Not attached to another piece.

I was surprised with the dealer's explanation, but then I could see it.

It will be in my new shipment arriving in January :-)

I will post the answer Friday

  3. If the interior section is flat...used as a mirror? the top of a reception table? Whatever it was, it is wonderful!

  4. Thanks Pat for playing,
A clue.,..the 2 metal rings at the top are original as it was hung in its use.

There is no back or front....both sides the same so you can view from either direction

  6. Hi Nance, It's gorgeous. My first thought was that it was used to hang to block drafts, but I don't think that's right. Don't keep us in suspense for too long! Lisa

  10. I'm as surprised as you are. The clue came from DD who suggested that it could be a pub sign. I wish I knew more. All I can say is that it must have been a very special restaurant to have commissioned such a beautifully carved sign.
